First of all the Maltese verbs have no infinitive. I am is translated either by:jien (yin) or by:jien nezisti; but: I am reading=Qed naqra or jien qed naqra. In the negative one uses:ma or m’ before a pronoun or verb, and one has to add x to the pronoun or other words.Ex.: I am not=m’inix; they are not=m’humiex; I didn’t go=ma mortx; titkellem bil-Malti?=do you speak Maltese?; mhux hafna(mush hafna)=not much. The numbers 1-10: 1=wiehed (wihed); 2=tnejn(tneyn); 3=tlieta(tlita); 4-erbgha(erba); 5=hamsa; 6=sitta; 7=sebgha(seba); 8=tmienja(tminya); 9=disgha(disa); 10=ghaxra(ashra). Some salutations: Bongu or Il-jum it-tajjeb (il yum it tayeb)=good morning);il-lejl it-tajjeb(il leyl it tayeb)=good night;sahha (saha)=good-bye; kif int?=how are you?; tajjeb, grazzi u int?(tayeb grazi u int?)=very well, thank you, and you?;skuzi?=I beg your pardon; skuzani (skoozani)=sorry,excuse me; fejn nista’ nsib?(feyn nista nsib)=where may I find; hafna=much; m’inix nifhem=I don’t understand; tista’ tghidli?(tista teydli)=can you tell me?;intlift=I’m lost.
